My wife has been on a kick lately of Netflixing movies that may have been big on the independent circuit but lesser known to the mainstream American moviegoer. Last night, after three previous tries of watching this movie (all ending with one of us falling asleep- though no fault of the movie) we finally finished Looking for Eric. If you haven’t watched it or even heard of it, it’s basically about a twice heartbroken Dad of three (2 boys from one woman, and a daughter from his first love) who through the help of his imaginary football hero gets his life back in order. It was surprisingly humorous and actually an upbeat movie despite some of the tough situations our protagonist finds himself in. It’s also fun to get a glimpse of how passionate the blokes across the pond really are about their favorite football squad.

If you are looking for something off the beaten track, I definitely recommend it.

After sitting on our GI Joe netflix for over 3 weeks now I was finally able to talk my wife into watching it last night. As someone who grew up playing with the action figures with my brother, watching the cartoon after school, and reading whatever comics my brother would allow me to read (as long as I didn’t crease them or break the spine), I thorougly enjoyed the movie. Where Transformers incorporated a little too much cheese factor and gratuitous sex appeal with Megan Fox, GI Joe kept it strictly business with the Joes chasing after Cobra for most of the movie. The special effects were pretty cool (a little too cool at times), but if you are into non-stop action and grew up with GI Joe, you will enjoy the movie tremendously. And yes, I admit that I narrated who the characters were, along with their backstory throughout the movie for the benefit of my in-laws.

Which got me thinking about the original GI Joe PSAs… Not only were the cartoons fun to watch, you learned something along the way.

And now you know…
