Our Fun Mother’s Day Adventure

The day got off to a great start… my wife got to sleep in… my son and I ran out to grab flowers and breakfast for Mother’s day.

And then this happened.

Kudos to INOVA for the quickest emergency room visit ever. In and out in under an hour!

National Train Day

Had a lot of fun yesterday with the family at National Train Day even if it was a tad hectic with the mass of crowds. I would definitely recommend it to other parents next year for kids ages 5 and up. While we had the best of intentions for our son, he was just a tad too young to truly enjoy all of the events and access to the trains that we were able to walk through (after waiting in line for an hour).

Anyway, you can catch some of the highlights from our family day over at E’s blog.

Mostly Sunny with a Chance of Perfection

Every once in awhile the DC area gets a day of absolute perfection in the early parts of the year, and yesterday was one of those days. The high reached 77 at Reagan Washington National and the family and I were able to spend an afternoon outdoors soaking in the sun. It really was a perfect afternoon, and one that I will not soon forget.

And not surprisingly, the perfect day was followed by the perfect sunrise… Which Ethan, Match and I were fortunate enough to catch this morning on our Starbucks rub thanks to an early wake up by Mr. E.

Holiday Family Hijinx

With the busy holiday season upon us, sneaking away to blog about anything technology or social media related has been challenging. And perhaps promising to keep up a blog about my son, contributing to Grafik’s blog, AND maintaining this blog has been too much to handle. Having said that, there are a couple of new posts up on E’s blog if you want to check them out.

One post briefly describes our adventure down to Dallas to visit some of my wife’s family for a pre-Christmas gathering. The other post is just a brief collection of pre-Christmas and Christmas videos. What a blast we had this year watching E as he clearly grasped the concept of Christmas, Santa, toys, and opening presents. He has been a joy to behold, and the extra time I’ve had to spend with my family this season as I burned up my remaining leave has been a blessing.

Happy holidays!

Daddy Blogger?

Lately, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to quitting my day job, selling our house, moving to the Eastern Shore and becoming a daddy blogger so that I could stay home with my son. I haven’t done much research yet to determine if the daddy blogger space is as crowded as the mommy blogger space, but from my experience working with my friends at Baby Stay Asleep, I get the feeling sometimes that moms are the de facto voice out there evaluating kid products, parenting techniques, child rearing tips, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I think a large majority of the “mommy bloggers” do a great job, but where are the dads? While there may be a handful of men out there doing their part to demonstrate that we men are just as responsible and effective parents as our female counterparts, many of them do not really sound or look like real men’s men. Do they have teams contending in multiple fantasy football leagues? Do they spend a few minutes each day reviewing the different types of balls that are used in various team sports with their kids? Do they even work out? From what I’ve seen, the answer to all of these questions are “no.” That said, there are a lot of regular manly men out there that are great dads. Do they know where to look to find men just like them? Do they know where to look for advice when they’ve been asked to run to Target to pick up more formula for junior? Maybe. Like I said, I haven’t done my research yet.

For now, I will continue to update my son’s blog and daydream about this alternative (and slightly risky) venture. And who knows, with a little research crammed in between updating my fantasy football rosters, I might find something that turns that dream into a reality. For now, you can read about the past few days of parenting my sick child solo while the wife is out-of-town.

The Perfect Day

There are some days that you will remember for a long time… and today was definitely one of those days – absolutely perfect family day.

You can read all about our day at the Smithsonian here.

It certainly didn’t hurt that there was no Redskins game to sweat out. Saving that pleasure for tomorrow.

A “Quick” Marathon Visit

Hard to believe that four? five? years had passed since I had caught up with one of my best friends from high school and his wonderful wife. Granted, when this friend is stationed overseas for 3+ years in the Pacific, it makes it a tad bit more challenging. But, we were blessed to have Noa and Julie in town for the Marine Corps Marathon this past weekend and able to spend some quality time laying low and catching up. Amazing how easy it is to kill 6+ hours just talking when you’re with people who really know you and can relate to you.

Noa finished the marathon in 3:46:46, which is about where he was aiming for and certainly faster than I could ever hope or dream to, on what turned out to be a perfect Halloween day in DC – sunny and low 60′s (maybe a tad breezy but hey… who’s complaining?)

Congrats buddy, and safe travels back home to your new home in Washington. I’m sure we’ll be out to see you next summer.

Finally… a Good Family Beach Pic

My wife’s uncle was finally able to send us some pictures from our recent trip to Ocean City over Fourth of July weekend and included were a few good pictures of our family and Ethan on the beach.

We had thought the little guy would be a little timid with the waves and sand, but after tasting the sand a few times and having a few waves get him good and wet, he had a blast. Yay for summer…

Independence, Happy Fourth of July!

This will be the first year in probably the past five years that I’ll actually see some kind of fireworks. Last summer our son was only 3 months old and I think we were asleep before the fireworks even started. The summer before that, my wife and I were a week out from our wedding and in high planning mode. The years before that, it just wasn’t a priority. The funny thing is that I’ve always equated the Fourth of July to fireworks, and not necessarily to the event that led to the day itself, nor the independence that our men and women in uniform continually defend. I suspect I’m not alone in this.

I have boarded this train of thought because every year, the fantasy football service I receive daily emails from takes a break from the daily barrage of NFL free agency moves, or the idiotic shenanigans of players like Albert Haynesworth to send the Declaration of Independence. In previous years, I’ve scanned through the first paragraph or two and then delete the email. This morning, for whatever reason, I read the entire Declaration. When was the last time you did? It’s pretty powerful stuff, and as the author of the email pointed out, extremely ballsy given how outnumbered and overshadowed the colonists were by Great Britain. It makes you wonder if we could overthrow the same sort of tyranny today or if something like that could even happen again without foreign support. In any event, if you haven’t read the Declaration recently, check it out and refresh your memory.

In any event, before my group begins to celebrate all that this day represents with the masses here in Ocean City this evening, I want to thank our founding fathers for having the guts to set an example for our nation to follow for the next 234 years, and thank all the men and women who put their life on the line every day to protect this nation. The beer I’ll raise this evening is possible thanks to you. I only ask that the men and women who we’ve elected to represent the people don’t forget that they are indeed representing the people and could probably stand to remind themselves of what this country was founded on over two centuries ago.

Happy Fourth everyone!

A Little Family Cameo on Fox News This Morning

Del Ray’s First Thursday was featured on Fox News this morning and we just happened to be the “after school special” couple referenced by Fox’s Holly Morris. Too funny.

Yup, just your average day in Del Ray… :)

P.S. Kind of annoying that WordPress won’t let me embed the video, so you can always watch it here.
